Motif is "Ako-Gishi 47".Or other title "Chushingura".
This is a historical fact that many Japanese know, and is featured in reading materials, plays, and movies.
There was a revenge drama in 1702 in Edo(Tokyo), 47 faithful retainers of Lord Asano carried out the revenge against the man they held responsible for the down fall and death of their load.
How it began.
There happened an affair involving bloodshed when the big entertainment ceremony for the emperor was being held in the April of 1701..
The young Lord Asano from Ako attempted to kill another Lord Kira who was in charge of teaching the manner of the entertainment to Asano, but humiliated Asano again and again during the preparation for the ceremony..
Kira could escap from the attack without fatal injury, but the Load Asano was ordered to commit hara-kiri( suicide by killing oneself in the abdomen ) instantly and his land was confiscated by the Shogun. That was the beginning of the drama about 47 samurai’s(retainer) revenge which took 1 year and 9 months to accomplish.
Why Asano was so humiliated as to attempt killing Kira?
Akoh (the land of the lord Asano ) has been producing good quality salt while Kiras land has been also producing solt. Kira was thought to be envious of Asano because of his wealth brought from quality salt. This is one explanation about why Kira humiliated young Lord Asano in the Edo castle.
How 47 samurais worked for the revenge?
Oishi (the NO2 of Akoh castle) was the leader of 47 samurais. The plan and preparation of the revenge must be done in secret.
Most 47 samurais were in Edo disguised them as various citizens like noodle shop owner or carpenter. Many dramas were made among them before the revenge was accomplished.
The revenge was dramatically accomplished.
It was mid night of 14th December in 1702, Oishi and his 46 samurais headed to the Kira’s residence in Edo in heavy snow fall.
After successful fight, at long last, they could find their bitter enemy Kira hiding in small warehouse and they achieved their wish. It was 4 am.
Though this revenge made most citizens pleased and cheerful, Shogun ordered 47 samurais to commit hara-kiri(suiside ) for to keep the order of his world.
Of course 47 samurais had been determined for the suicide even before the revenge.
This real story has been played in kabuki, movie and TV drama again and again.
This has long been the symbol of Japanese sprit of justice and loyalty to the organization.
But the world is changing, mindset of people are changing.
